Traffic death rates are three times greater at night than during day time. That is why, we should be aware of special hazards and learn to deal with them. Driving when the lights are minimal is challenging for some, and also very dangerous. Here are some of the pointers that one should remember when driving at night.

  • Prepare your car for night driving. Clean headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows once a week, more often if necessary. Aim your headlights
  • Pay attention to your limits and don’t push your body more than it can be pushed. Stop often for coffee, rest breaks and fresh air. And if you feel like you can’t make it any further, call it a night.
  • Never wear dark glasses. For obvious reason.
  • Always, always, always stay away from drivers who look out of control. At night, on weekends especially, with parties going on and the bars busy, make sure to keep a safe distance between yourself and anyone who may have had too much to drink.
  • Avoid glare. Glare can seriously lessen your ability to see clearly. Many times it can even cause temporary blindness.
  • When following another vehicle, keep your headlights on low beams so you don’t blind the driver ahead of you.
  • Be Extra Careful
  • Adjust speed accordingly. Because of decreased visibility, driving too fast is more dangerous after dark than during the day. You can only see as far ahead as your headlights carry.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Not only does alcohol severely impair your driving ability, but it also acts as a depressant.
  • Always bear in mind that emergencies are always worst at night so always be prepared .
